THE RESIDENT DJ EXPERIENCE
22 August 2012
Over 500 DJ's from across the world entered our competition in February, by submitting their best 30 minute mixes to Mixcloud. After several rounds of judging, two winners were given the opportunity of a lifetime and became the next Ibiza Rocks & Mallorca Rocks resident DJs.
London based DJ Ste-V-Something has had quite a summer... The winner of the Mixcloud Ibiza Rocks DJ Competition has been rockin' Ibiza day and night as the hotel resident DJ at poolside, on gig nights, on board the boat parties and around the island. We caught up with him this week to find out what it's like to be a full time Resident DJ on the White Isle and to give away a brand new summer Cloudcast he has put together on Mixcloud.
What does an average day as the Ibiza Rocks resident DJ look like?
I start at 10am every morning and make sure Ibiza rocks radio in on around both pools. Then a little bit of time spent in the office and start DJing at midday around the main pool. Most days we have a guest DJ from one of the club night we support ie Hed Kandi, Cream, Together etc.. Its my job to look after them and play before and after. Pretty straight forward stuff. I also play at the Ibiza Rocks bar a few nights a week.
Every week you warm up the crowd at the Ibiza Rocks gigs - how do you get people dancing?
Play good tunes and work the microphone a little. To be honest they take very little encouragement. From the moment to doors open on most gigs people come straight to front and start to boogie.
Any funny stories or star-stricken moments you can share with us from your time in Ibiza?
Most funny (or drunken) stories involve the San Antoni west end area or Pikes hotel for the after parties. Being back stage at Amnesia the other week was pretty cool. Lots of names i could drop but i like to play it cool :) But at the hotel i would have to say Diplo was bit of a big thing for me. Really nice guy and a bit of a hero of mine.
You’ve been DJ’ing from the pool-side stage, without a doubt the heart of the hotel! What’s been the best thing you got to see on the Ibiza Rocks stage?
For me i think Major Lazer one one of the most fun nights I've had. But obviously the atmosphere for Kasabian on our 7th Birthday was incredible.
You’ve also gone out to DJ on the legendary Ibiza Rocks The Boat parties every week. What’s the atmosphere on the boats like?
One word... Crazy! They have just got better and better over the season. We have even have problems with everyone dancing that much that the the roof of the boat nearly fell through.
What about elsewhere in Ibiza - where do you like to let you hair down?
Think my favourite night is We Love at Space. Always great line up and a good mixture of music. Also DC10 has to be up there with one of the best nights I've ever had.
And being in Ibiza for the whole summer means you’ll probably need down-time, too. Where on the island is your favourite place to chill out?
On my balcony. It looks out on San Antoni and it really quiet and its over the other side of the hotel. Also Cala Gracio Beach is beautiful and along a short walk from the hotel.
Tune-wise, have there been any surprise hits with the Ibiza Rocks crowd this summer?
Would have the say Jascha- Gravel Pit is one of my favourite pool tracks and people always asking me who its by. But by far the track i get asked for the most is Niggas In Parris- Jay-Z & Kanye West, thats why we (my other production name) Ten Story did a little Re-work. Its featured on the new mixtape.
This year has seen the launch of W.A.R! gigs at the hotel, which you’ve popped in to play at a couple of times. Do you feel like a Rockstar?!
Playing on that stage with such a great visual set up you do defiantly feel like a bit of a star. Ive been to all the W.A.R events though and have always had a great night.
Back in Bournemouth you’re also a resident DJ. How have you come to be at the stage you’re at now? We’re guessing Mixcloud was obviously a major factor...
The mix i did for the W.A.R & mixcloud comp was obviously the reason why I'm here in Ibiza now. But I like to think that all that practice at my own club night 'We Are Your Friends' has stood me in good sted as an Ibiza Rocks resident.
What can we look forward to hearing from your Cloudcast?
Another mixture of Indie, House, Hip Hop & Disco all blended & mixed seamlessly of course :)
